STEREOTYPES

Have you ever followed a stereotype? It is highly likely that you have, and that’s normal. However, it’s important to recognize that stereotypes are not entirely accurate. For example, the stereotypes that lawyers are deceitful or that French people are unpleasantly odorous are both harmful and misguided. Unfortunately, stereotypes are pervasive, and we often accept them without questioning their absurdity.

Moreover, we tend to assume that everyone in a social group (such as Argentinians, hippies, or Colombians) are the same, but there are always exceptions. People within any group have diverse perspectives, beliefs, and preferences that make them unique.

Believing in stereotypes, even unconsciously, can have negative effects. It can create invisible barriers that hinder the development of an equal society where cooperation among different social groups and hierarchies is possible. This leads to misunderstandings, reinforces discrimination and prejudice, limits opportunities, and inhibits growth for some social groups, ultimately affecting self-perception.

In summary, we should avoid relying on stereotypes and instead strive to understand individuals on their own merits, free from prejudices.
